Something you want to share or teach
E. g. I had bracelet materials with me, to give it as a present/memory, or to teach how to do a bracelet (I taught kids, teenagers, adults, elders, men, women!)
E. g. A friend told me that he traveld with a diabolo, he taught how to play it to everyone he met (and took a photo)!
-
Travel with a small photo album of your home and family. Photos have an international language. You will be stunned, people will be fascinated by your home.
-
Note book, write down your thoughts and ask everyone to write or draw a memory of your exchange!
-
A game you can play without speaking the same language
-
Gifts to share: Maybe you are an artist and you have nice and small drawing or photos you can give?
-
Take as less things as possible!
-
Light backpack (be careful with your back!!) & light daypack
-
NO clothes. When you see the beautiful fashion of the different countries, you want to buy it.
-
Good shoes
-
Mosquito spray, Disinfectants, dental floss (in some countries very difficult to get)
-
Chocolate as a gift for the first persons you meet. (Remember, chocolate melts when it’s too hot!)
-
Find a way how to share your journey (thoughts, impressions, encounters, photos, quotes you have heard or seen, jokes, …) with your family and friends.
E. g. via E-Mail, Telegram Channel, Blog (Polarsteps), Social Media, Exhibition/Presentation day after journey.
-
Chose a close family member/close friend. Inform this person about your next travel destination before you start travelling there (address, contact number). This is about respecting that these people care and worry for you. Don’t let them suffer!
-
Share your skills! Cooking? Baking? Teaching a software? Knowledge? Langages? Sharing a story? There is so much to share!

WHAT I RECOMMENT YOU TO DO IN DARWIN
Enjoy and appreciate the amazing cultue of the Aboriginies in Darwin. Fortunately, here are still opportunities here to learn from their culture and exchange stories.INDONESIAN VISA
I stayed in Darwin for one week. Enough time to apply for the Indonesian visa. I need a visa because I travel over see. (Peruvians, I think you don’t need a visa!) It took me four days and 80 Australian Dollar to get the Visa for Indonesia, without any difficulties.FINDING A BOAT
Basically just ask sailors for a free place at the ports, hang up a profile (contact, sailing experience, route), do research and ask locals.PORTS I RECOMMEND:
Dinah Beach, Sailing Club, and Cullen Bay.FINDING A BOAT WEBSITES I RECOMMEND:
https://www.crewbay.com/
http://www.handgegenkoje.de/HINTS:
There are seasons to sail to or sail back from Indonesia, because of the wind. Make sure to sail in the right season. Tipp: Research for official sailing group events, then the chanche is higher to find a boat. !Please! Have respect to the ocean and if you don’t have so much sailing experience make sure that your crew have years of experience! Also understand that you are sailing for a couple of days and you won’t have so much room to stretch on boat!IN MY CASE:
I have found two possible opportunities after the first day of asking around and hanging profiles in the three spots. (Don’t pay to hang your profiles!!) During the next weeks I got e-mails from the offers I have found on crewbay. Super nice! -

I have just decided that I only want to get on a plane for family reasons (Peru!). Thanks to all those friends who motivated me for this decision. Stupidly I have been in Melbourne in this moment.. So I wanted to try to get home as far as possible without getting on a plane. Why? Because I want to seek and call attention to sustainable, respectful, and individual travel. I want to avoid mass tourism and consumerism. I want to appreciate the chance to meet people with different points of view, spaces, and cultures. I want to exchange, be open, share, learn, and love. And one exciting thing I actually had no idea about: What’s between Melbourne and home? And who?
‘Traveling back home with honey’, because unexpectedly I met indescribably beautiful personalities with the most interesting stories, points of view and cultures. Not only did they share this knowledge with me, but also food, everyday life and their love. I believed in the people and symbols on this path and arrived home. THANK YOU, You have become my journey. I’ve connected you all with bracelets (luck – love – happiness)!
In general I recomment you during your travels: Give everyone a smile, talk to the people, be open and RESPECTFUL to the cultures and the nature. And enjoy. In case you want to judge behaviours, reactions politics etc.: please really think about what you really know and what not. And understand that you are traveling, most of us human beings don’t have the opportunity and the chance to travel.
Here on Polarsteps you can see the hole route with photos, my thoughts, and the amazing people I met. Click on the photo of the map. Don’t heasitate to ask if you have any questions!
